Massive redevelopment of The Backyard moves ahead west of Austin — with strings attached

The transformation of The Backyard music venue in Bee Cave into a Hill Country mixed-use outpost with a hotel, offices, condos, a high-end restaurant and data centers took a significant step forward this week.

At a marathon meeting that lasted into the wee hours of Dec. 14, Bee Cave City Council approved modifying the zoning for the project so International Development Management, or IDM, can build the data centers instead of movie studios and also erect an eco-friendly “distributed energy center”power plant on the site, among other changes. Council voted for the amendments contingent upon IDM building a new road connecting the development to State Highway 71.

Big jump in November home sales sets up Austin Realtors for another record year

Austin-area Realtors are experiencing a surprising holiday rush to end the year.

Single-family home sales across the metro area grew 15.8 percent in November compared to the same month in 2015, according to data released Thursday by the Austin Board of Realtors.

Another No. 1 for Austin: Texas capital’s home values grew faster than anywhere else over past decade

In the last decade, half of America has struggled with languid home values, while the other half of the country has seen rapidly rising prices. The national leader in the latter category was Austin, where the value of a typical home soared by 64.9 percent between Sept. 30, 2006, and Sept. 30, 2016.

Round Rock revisions to make real estate development easier

Round Rock is gearing up for the final stages of a comprehensive revision to its planning and development codes.

It’s the tail-end of a three year process that saw city officials comb through the rules and regulations of the Williamson County city north of Austin to put all of the planning and development codes into one place. At its meeting Nov. 16, members of Round Rock’s Planning and Zoning Commission began the first of three meetings to gather public feedback on the draft code. The next two are on Dec. 7 and Dec. 21. After that, it goes to the City Council for final consideration early next year.

Map shows where newcomers tend to settle down in Austin area

If you ever bump into a resident who lives near The Domain, there’s a pretty good chance that person has not lived there long.

The Austin Business Journal has produced an interactive map showing the proportion of households occupied by residents who have moved in since 2010. It’s colored from light yellow to red. Darker red blocks have a higher percentage of households whose residents have moved in since 2010. Click within each block group to view the related data.
