Massive redevelopment of The Backyard moves ahead west of Austin — with strings attached

The transformation of The Backyard music venue in Bee Cave into a Hill Country mixed-use outpost with a hotel, offices, condos, a high-end restaurant and data centers took a significant step forward this week.

At a marathon meeting that lasted into the wee hours of Dec. 14, Bee Cave City Council approved modifying the zoning for the project so International Development Management, or IDM, can build the data centers instead of movie studios and also erect an eco-friendly “distributed energy center”power plant on the site, among other changes. Council voted for the amendments contingent upon IDM building a new road connecting the development to State Highway 71.
