Houston apartment supply vs. demand at a tipping point

Since oil prices crashed in late 2014, the supply of new apartment units has exceeded demand.

This glut of new Class A apartments has forced developers to stall new projects and owners to offer up to three months of rent concessions to keep occupancy rates up. Rents plummeted as energy companies shed thousands of jobs, causing demand for luxury apartments to plunge.

Houston among top 10 on new list of America’s 50 Best Large Cities

Houston takes the No. 7 spot on Resonance Consultancy’s 2017 list of America’s 50 Best Large Cities.

The Bayou City was the only Texas metro to make the top 10, while Austin came in at No. 11, Dallas was No. 15, and San Antonio ranked No. 17. However, El Paso did rank No. 10 on the list of best small cities in the U.S.

For West Coast construction co., Houston health care brings business boon

A West Coast construction firm is benefitting immensely from Houston’s health care boom.

Redwood City, California-based DPR Construction’s Houston office has grown exponentially since it opened its doors in 2014 with 12 employees. Today, DPR’s Houston office has a total of 97 employees – around 55 full-time, in-office employees – and the company’s experienced more growth in Texas than any other U.S. region, DPR’s Jennifer Oliverio said.

How this $500M mixed-use center off Grand Parkway came to be

Parkway Lakes Development Inc., a development company run by the Ferguson family, has been quietly acquiring land throughout Houston for decades.

The company, which is helmed by Robert Sr., Robert Jr. and Corey Ferguson, is developing District West, a roughly 100-acre mixed-use center in west Houston near the Grand Parkway with help from Houston-based Wulfe & Co.

Houston CRE experts speak on historic renovations, sublease challenges, Class A rents

A panel of real estate experts spoke on the challenges of subleases, owning an historic office building and navigating tenants’ demands at a CREW Network luncheon on June 7 at the Junior League of Houston.

Michelle Wogan, executive vice president at Transwestern, Cheryl Gajeske, principal at the architecture firm PGAL, and Stephanie Lucas Harrison of the law firm Coats Rose PC spoke at the luncheon.
